Over engineering makes more money. But what I think happened here mostly is that engineers copied and pasted previous jobs to save time, then they don't go through the new job thoroughly enough to make the proper modifications needed for this job. That explains the extra valving and thermostats in the same space, and probably the wildly oversized systems. Then the trades mostly just do what they're asked to do and move on to the next job. The engineer isn't usually involved as much after the initial bid, and even if they are, many don't like admitting their mistakes.

Hello. Very good content. Regarding the whisper-quiet heat pump, after my first winter with the arotherm plus, I can agrree it is quiet, except during defrosts or when running at 100%. And if you want to have few on/offs => not oversized Hp, you WILL run your HP at 100% when at outside desined temp of -3 outside (or -8C in my case).

Hey, what do you think of residential MVHR systems. About to do a self build, approx 4000 sq ft and considering one as well as an air source heat pump system

Fitted a vr940f with outdoor sensor and switched from 2 zone system to fully open circuit.. gas usage has dropped 20% according to my latest annual statement.. however i will need to change some single rads to doubles upstairs on the north facing rooms as they seem to struggle with the lower flow temperatures.

13 years is, honestly, not a long time for a heat source of a house. I want my unit to run for at least twenty years if not longer.

I've had a ground-source heat pump for 3 winters now and very happy with it. However, I would be very curious to see what the actual SCOP it is achieving. What are the components needed? Can I integrate such a monitoring system in my Home Assistant? And what is that small box with the transparent housing to the right of the black Energy Monitoring unit on the wall at 9:50? Love to see your work. We are already 13 years telling clients not to do zoning, and we don't use buffer tanks. Use them only on very big systems where heat pump must have very high flow. Nice work, guys. I always enjoy watching you.

In cold weather the ASHP may freeze if its working hard. Wigh no buffer where does it draw heat from when it reverses if there is no extra volume in the form of a low loss header or buffer? Having said that that im not sure if you design a buffer vessrl under the hot water storage as per old school???

The heatpump will run 24/7 because if the r value of the walls, or a lot of on and off I got a similar system but the pipes are covered with a Knauf dry screed system 32mm thick than wooden floor. Works well with 80w /m2 temperature 40 C . Got a 800 litre combi buffer with solar thermal booster. Stores about 40kw hot water at 60C . Enough for 4 to 6 hours . i think the lack of insulation in the walls could be challenging.

A properly calculated system! I am not anti-heat pumps in principle! But I have clients who have had a a heat pump installed (ie by cowboys!) only to have thrown it out after 1 winter in the Scottish highlands! I tend to advocate for a hybrid model ie with oil/gas and heat pump, controlled with weather compensation. I do agree follow the maths and the vast majority of the time heat pumps will satisfy most applications. Additionally a hybrid model will also provide heat and hot water in the event of heat pump or boiler failure/breakdown!

I love these videos, explaining how simple it can be and the big part is heating the whole structure as one. It is crazy how this was done to every house.

Im really starting to get into this heatpump installing after fitting combi's and earlier back boilers for 25 years. Ive recently done a bpec course to fit a heat pump. Which was a waste of a thousand pound. Would you recommend the heat geek course?

That look like a terrible setup. At least the alpha one works. They are not bothered about their carbon footprint with a swimming pool in the garden. 😂

Little discrepancy puzzle, maybe you could enligthen us all on Design differences. Friends have a bungalow with oil-boiler in many ways similar to the above. When I look at radiator sizing using modern sizing calculators, and compare to heatgeek website, I find the sorts of radiator sizings you appear to use would be described as 45 degC not 40degC. I generally note, considering another house, trying to go to radiator sizings compared to heatgeek website for 40DegC seems to require giant type-22 radiators or many type-33 very expensive. Pipework sizing on heatgeek website suggests 2.75kW ok on 15mm pipe, whereas, another HeatGeek Elite, and H2X sizing system, both seem to suggest less than that. Can you shed light on why so many discrepancies to be found out there? With many thanks,

Do you have any videos of you fitting a heat pump with multiple underfloor heating manifolds and radiator circuit?

I will be installing heat pumps, however, I do not expect to be able to use them in the depth of winter as the temperatures get to -30 Celsius. At that temperature the heat pumps simply can't keep up.

3 years ago, we moved from an LPG tank that the company now said was not allowed to be where it had sat for the last 50 years. So moved to ASHP and redid all the radiators as the others were the original and starting to go rusty. Thankfully got a fantastic RHI payment. I have a Midea ASHP and the app is bad, only counts in whole numbers for kWh usage and even though heating is off it claims it used 2 kWh for heating, rather than DHW. The house has been warmer and cheaper to run since having this ASHP fitted. Especially when used with a cheap overnight tariff! So I have just bought the Open Energy Monitor Kit and waiting for it to be installed. A video showing what parts are needing to be fitted and how it is fitted would be useful as nothing is out there that shows this. Also a ballpark figure for cost of fitting to an existing sytem would be helpful.

Is there a rule or no. When you combining 3 d1 pipes it needs to be upsized? Say for 3 15mm d1 you need to upsize last tee to 22 and tundish will 22 to 28?

Seriously? You could probably heat that bungalow on a diesel heater, heat recovery and up to date insulation levels

They will be freezing cold come the winter and the noise will drive them crazy. Air heat pumps do not work particularly well in this cold and damp country. Also, net zero is a complete con.

Is that unit an r32 or 290

10% cheaper...ROI on that? I have heat pumps but I went air to air as it's an old farmhouse and too expensive to seal up, insulate add heat exchangers for fresh air flow.

Hmm, if the oil boiler had reached the end of its life may be yes heat pump but even then only because of the boiler improvement grant. If the oil boiler is still in good working order what would have been the reduction in running costs achieved by bringing it up to the same standard of insulation that you are putting in for the heat pump and adding modern weather compensated controls. I guess 20 % plus for very little capital outlay. The economics would then be such that you couldnt recover the capital costs of the heat pump within its 10 year life span. Of course at that 10 year point its likely than you will have to stump up the full cost of the replacement heat pump 4 times the cost of a replacement condensing oil boiler? I can see the value of heat pumps in mew installations but im afraid Im still unconvinced about conversions, by the way theres absolutely no way that the solar panels you can fit on that roof will generate enough electricity to power your heat pump through the winter either.

A great install, but just for balance we both know that ASHP will not last 20 years, it will be obsolete in 3; your estimated SCOP is optomistic. Thermal efficiency of house will mean the cumulative heat loss due to running all day will weigh against it when compared to oil which will need roughly only an hour, at most, to heat that house up. Also kerosene is more than x4 cheaper than electricity.

But when you factor in 20 grand for the system. Not good.
